The Challenge
One of Britain’s most recognised retailers was reimagining its financial services digital experience — money management and home insurance products used by millions. The products demanded a balance between brand warmth, regulatory compliance, accessibility, and the emotional clarity that financial decisions require. I was brought in to embed directly within their internal product design and UX research team, operating across website and app, within their established design systems, review cycles, and product culture.
The Process
Embedding & Building Trust
Integrated into the retailer’s product design team from day one — not as an external consultant, but as a working team member. Quickly built relationships across product, engineering, UX research, and compliance. In a team of strong designers, the challenge was to earn trust through craft quality and collaborative instinct, not just credentials.
Shaping End-to-End Journeys
Led design across money and home insurance flows — connecting information architecture, interaction models, and visual craft into experiences that felt both intuitive and brand-consistent. Every design decision had to navigate compliance constraints, accessibility standards (WCAG), and the emotional weight of financial product decisions.
Systems Thinking & Component Design
Worked within the retailer’s component library and design system, extending patterns where needed rather than creating parallel systems. Designed scalable, reusable interaction frameworks that maintained consistency across multiple product touchpoints — ensuring design coherence well beyond the engagement.
Collaboration & Design Leadership
Partnered closely with product managers and engineers to influence product direction and ensure technical feasibility shaped the final solutions. Provided constructive design critique in team reviews and supported mid-weight designers through structured feedback that built their craft autonomy and confidence.
The Outcome
Delivered high-quality UI and interaction design across two financial services product streams, operating within established design systems and review processes. Demonstrated the ability to bring structure to ambiguity, collaborate deeply with cross-functional partners, and deliver insight-led, accessible experiences at scale in a regulated product environment.
